2026 Brain Injury Awareness Month
BEST highlights Besties and theÂ
reality of living with brain injury
March is brain injury awareness month. Every year BEST uses the opportunity to educate people about brain injury and what BEST does to help survivors along their brain injury journey.
BEST’s Brain Injury Awareness GroupÂ
This year BEST convened a group of Bestie volunteers to decide what they want others to know about what their lives are really like after brain injury. They discussed many of the things that Besties often mention during our AfterHours discussions, including:
- how their brain injury affected them and their families
- what their daily struggles and frustrations are
- how much they strive to function and improve
- how hard it was and is to find help
- how medical and service providers treated (or mistreated) them
- how their injuries affectectd their finances and their ability to work
- how frustrating it is to struggle to do things that used to be easy
- how much they feel judged and marginalized
- why some days are better than others
- how much they feel misunderstood
- and how it’s not all “in their head”
BEST’s BIA Theme
Ultimately, the Bestie volunteers decided that BEST’s theme for this month should be the reality of living with brain injury – not just the recovery and the successes. They wanted to emphasize how much survivors feel like their brain injuries, their struggles, and their needs are often overlooked, under-prioritized, and minimized.
After choosing the theme, the Besties created a brain injury awareness plan and recruited other BESTies to share their stories and lived experiences. BEST will highlight this theme and stories of various BESTies throughout the month through social media posts, website blogs, and video interviews.
Follow their journey on the website blog and on social media at @bestbrainorg. If you want to join the effort and share your experiences, please contact Michelle Wild at michelle@bestconnections.org.
